745i Turbo

Question:

Meant to add, it was called the 745 as 3.2 litres * 1.4 = 4.5. The 1.4 was a performance modified used in the german DTM (?) racing series for turbo cars. — Who needs a life when you’ve got Unix? :-)   Scotland Web  : http://www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk – The Ultimate BMW Homepage!

I’m interested in learning about the mid 80’s 745i turbo. I currently have an 85 735i and think the idea of a bigger turbo charged engine is appealing. I’m not sure what the actual capacity is but it isn’t a 4.5.  I remember reading that BMW badged it as a 45 because that’s the equivalent capacity that would have been required from a NA engine to give the same power output, i.e. they applied a turbo conversion factor.  The actual capacity is more likely to be around 3.5 – 4.0.

Actual capacity was 3.2 and 3.3, it changed in the final year I think. — Who needs a life when you’ve got Unix? :-)   Scotland Web  : http://www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk – The Ultimate BMW Homepage!

Response:

Well, it is a grey market car, so don’t expect dealerships to work on it, at all, let alone even look at it for that matter. This may be good anywho, since dealerships for the most part want gravy jobs, and 745i-type work does not fall into this category.  Parts are EXPENSIVE, and pretty hard to find, timely delivery is not something to expect, so daily-only-driver is not a good thing to depend on it for. As for the heat, not a southern car or hot weather car. Turbo’s do burn out, add if you can pre/post coolant system for the turbo oil.  Helps a bunch, and not too expensive. Turbo lag is a drag, drove 2, same problem.  Can be tuned but that is sometimes more than most are willing to learn, YMWV.  Other people may want to jump in here, what is your experience with a turbo BMW? t – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m interested in learning about the mid 80’s 745i turbo. Hi, I just purchased a 1981 745i T turbo 3 months ago. This is a grey  market car. The engine blew from overheating. The head and block are both cracked as is the turbo housing.  I need a new block, heads and housing. Does anyone know where I might get one locally. I live in Northern California. I am also open to shipping from other locations. I was told that I could not get a new one shipped from BMW since it would be held by customs. Is this true.
