Roadrunner Logo … Seen it?

Question:

The logo you are talking about was not a mopar emblem. It was (or is) an emblem used by the company that makes (made) thrush mufflers. It was a woodpecker with a stogie as you said.                                        Greg

Response:

I have been looking for a particular logo that I believe Chrysler used fort one if its cars in the late sixties.  It looks like the road runner. I also believe that a motor oil company used something like this road- runner but the back of the bird’s head turned into flames and was smoking a stogie.  I checked several car mags without any luck.  If any one thinks they know what I am trying to describe, AND knows where I can find a picture of the logo, please post. Thanks in advance. Jeff.

Anyone see the movie ‘Destiny turns on the Radio’??  It featured a Road Runner that had a ‘wheel cover’ on one of the wheels that had a Road Runner logo on it..  It was one of those wheel cover things that don’t turn as the wheel does.. looked really cool! – Marc Reiter [ [ http://w3.one.net/~marc/ [ [ <a href="http://w3.one.net/~marc/"Marc's Homepage</a

And flames coming off the back of it's head... Yes, Thrush did have this logo (don't know if they still do or not) and Clay Smith Racing uses it as their logo too. Later, Dave

The smoking Woody Woodpecker was used by Thrush mufflers and is currently in use by Clay Smith Cams. I used to have the decal on the back window of my truck, right next to the Mooneyes decal. You can still get the decals from Mooneyes USA.  They cost as follows: small - $1.25 medium - 1.50 large  - 3.00 They also have T-shirts, keyrings, hats, sweatshirts, etc... Their # is 310-944-6311. You can see their ad in Street Rodder Magazine on pages 115, 116 and 117. Hope this helps. Another interesting note - I recall seeing a pinstriper's personal street rod in a magazine. He had hand-painted the Thrush woodpecker, but  instead of a cigar, he had a dagger brush in his mouth and his head looked more like it was flaming than the semi-scalloped look of the original. The Roadrunner logo used on the Plym Roadrunner was identical to the Warner Bros. character (ie. the one Wile E. Coyote always chased). Sometimes it had a helmet on and sometimes it didn't. Used to be able to buy the decals at Mopar parts counters. I believe the stogie-smoking bird logo was used by Thrush mufflers (the kind that used to be used by high school kids everywhere on their 6 cyl 63 Falcons to reduce backpressure and to release the latent horsepower we all knew was in there somewhere waiting to get out. If it was loud, it had to go faster, right?) Bob

I remember a woodpecker smoking a cigar as some sort of hot rod logo, and have seen decals with this symbol at car shows where they sell patches, sticker, decals, etc.  The roadrunner logo was used by CC in the muscle car days for a particular model. You can probably find details at one of the Mopar websites.

That would be the Thrush logo; makes of headers/exhaust systems. I don’t know if they are still around.  Look at the back issues of Hot Rod or such in the early-80’s. I might even have one of those stickers, but probably not.

Jeff, I recall the stogie smoking bird (which admittedly does look like a the roadrunner) and I’m not 100% sure, but I think Thrush Headers used that logo.  However, the bird used by Chrysler was that same roadrunner used in the Warner Bros. cartoon.  Chrysler obtained licensing rights from WB to the logo during the late 60’s and early 70’s.  Back in ‘73-’75 I owned a ‘70 Roadrunner.  There was a small decal of the bird on the front fenders just above, and in front of, the front wheel about 3"-4" tall.   As I recall, it had a small dust swirl behind its feet about 1"-2" long.  There was another version (that I added to my car – and in all honsety probably came from the wonderful Superbird model) where the dust swirl went all the way from the front fender, across the driver and passenger door, and to the small (phoney) vent scoop just in front of the rear wheel.  There was also a large circular decal with the bird in the middle, holding a racing helmet, about 6"-8" round that mounted about half way up that gosh awful tall spoiler on the Superbird.  As I recall there was also one on the aircleaner and something to the effect of a logo copywrite notice (for Warner Bros.) on the horn (I’f you can call that ridiculus beep-beep noise maker a horn). Hope this helps Bob Seavey
