I like my ‘97. Unfortunately, you can’t get 5-sp with the 2.3 engine, or with a V-6

I got a black ‘97 Stratus ES in the fall of ‘96 with the 2.5L auto-stick. Overall it’s great mechanically and has been very reliable. I like the handling on corners and the psuedo shifting is fun when I’m in the mood to use it. The CD/sound system is excellent, Carlos Santana never sounded so good! The one problem I haven’t resolved yet is the burned power steering fluid effect. The steering is noisy when it’s cold when I first start out. I’m not noticing it during the warm weather but need to get it fixed before the 3 year warranty expires this fall. TM – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I like my ‘97. There is a owner’s survey in last months Road & Track that wasn’t too complimentary and Consumer Reports hated the car last I looked (a year and a half ago). But both assessments were heavily weighted on the earlier ‘95 and ‘96 cars. Most of the problems mentioned were were addressed by the’97 model year. Have 38,000 miles on my ‘97 with 2.4 automatic. A few problems resolved under warranty but overall we love the car. Tom — Designer-Illustrator-Modeler Iowa State University Check out my vintage race pics at: www.public.iastate.edu/~thiett

Bill, I have a 1995 Dodge Stratus ES V6. I have close to 100,000 miles. I drive a lot of highway and the car has performed. The only thing that has been done since I have bought it is replaced: tires, brakes, and oil changes (plus recalls). The car runs as good as new. The only thing I never liked about the car was the suspension should be stiffer and the inside of the car should be quieter. I own 1995 Dodge Stratus ES V6. I have close 78,000 Km (50,000 miles). Brakes and tires have been replaced. My new tires are Nokian NRV, fantastic with rain conditions, and the ride is realy quieter. A few problems resolved under warranty but overall it’s one of my best cars. Pierre Melancon – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I like my ‘97. I have a 95 Cirrus LXi and love it. My only compaint is the same as the Stratus, interior noise is a little too much… and I wish it had more power. But it has been a very reliable car. Just put Yokohama tires on it. They are quiet running tires. Jim

I posted a week ago re: my 97 ES "Yes. Good." Not very helpful. The messages here are good and I generally agree with them. It really puzzles me why you see so many negative reports in the press. Even the Consumer Reports dislike of "All Things Chrysler" doesnt really explain it all. It seems to me there’s a rather large difference between the base Stratus and the ES. Some of the reports were based on the base model, not the ES. If you wanted a 97 with a V6 you got the ES which includes : speed sensitive steering Great feature! alloy wheels and different tires (good) AutoStick Fun! maybe stiffer suspension (I like it.) antilock brakes (nice feature) mine has the manual seat height adjust with lumbar support. This may have been an option, but it’s really a useful feature. I think CR even criticized the handling yet reported very good scores in the emergency handling test…..

I would have to agree . . .the interior noise gets quite annoying if you’re driving faster then 110 km/h (66 mph). The suspension really depends on your driving habits though. It’s nice because it absorbes bumps quite well, although the trade off is that you sway a bit on turns. I have the 2.4 L base model and i would have to say that it’s performes quite will for it’s size, but the V6, although not much bigger, is apparently a bit quiter when accelerating. Interior space is great for a mid-size car, however the back seats lack head/neck support and are just too flat for trips longer then 2 hours. Anyways, that’s just my opinion. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Bill, I have a 1995 Dodge Stratus ES V6. I have close to 100,000 miles. I drive a lot of highway and the car has performed.
